On August 10, President George W. Bush announced a new element in the Administration's plan to fight kleptocracy -- the National Strategy to Internationalize Efforts Against Kleptocracy. The strategy sets forth a framework to deter, prevent, and address high-level, public corruption.

IRI Poll Finds Armenians Want More Democratic Development

A national poll commissioned by the International Republican Institute (IRI) and conducted by the Gallup Organization/Baltic Surveys in coordination with the Armenian Sociological Association found that the Armenian people are optimistic about the development of the country’s economy and its future in general. However, Armenians expect more in terms of democratic development. The issues of main concern are social-economic stability, jobs and the independence of the Nagorno Karabakh region. (complete text)

Statement by Ambassadors and Heads of Intergovernmental Organizations in Yerevan

The international working group on elections was established in 2002 to provide a forum for the exchange of information and experience among representatives of international organizations and Embassies in Armenia that have been involved in election assistance. The group meets regularly and is chaired by the OSCE Office in Yerevan. Ambassadors and the heads of intergovernmental organizations involved in the working group met on March 9 and exchanged information about Armenia's progress in preparing for Parliamentary and Presidential elections that will be held in 2007 and 2008. MCC Responds to Armenia's President and Foreign Minister

On December 19, 2005 Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) CEO John Danilovich outlined the MCC's concerns over reports of irregularities in Armenia's November referendum. The Millennium Challenge Corporation responded to letters from President Kocharian and Foreign Affairs Minister Oskanian, and in December, Ambassador Danilovich recommended the signing of the MCC Compact with the Republic of Armenia.
