YEREVAN, ARMENIA – May 2, 2007 – IFES, through funding from USAID and in cooperation with the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), is implementing a large scale training project for Precinct Electoral Commissions (PEC) members to enhance their preparedness in advance of the National Assembly Elections in Armenia.
The project targets all PECs formed in the country. Within nine days, more than 17,000 PEC members will be trained in polling procedures, paying special attention to the recent amendments to the Electoral Code and CEC decisions, including voting envelopes, mobile voting, ballot guides, etc.
For the implementation of the project, 76 trainers were selected and trained, who will be supervised by 11 regional coordinators. All the trainers participated in an intensive IFES training program and received the instruction and materials necessary to conduct the PEC training sessions in Yerevan and all marzes of Armenia.
PEC trainings will commence on May 1 and will be completed on May 9, 2007. During the trainings, the PEC members will also receive manuals and training materials that, together with the Electoral Code and CEC decisions, will help them carry out their professional duties in accordance with the electoral legislation.
IFES/Armenia has completed two trainings of members of 41 Territorial Electoral Commissions. Now TEC members are engaged in training PEC members. The TECs will be important in coordinating and notifying the PEC members of the training venues and insuring the participation of all PEC members.
