U.S. Embassy Donates Equipment to the RA Police
December 2, 2011
On December 2, U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern met with Armenia's Chief of Police Lieutenant-General Vladimir Gasparian and donated approximately $150,000 of new office and computer equipment to the Armenian Police from the U.S. Government. The equipment will be used by the anti-cyber crimes and anti-narcotics divisions of the Main Department for Combating Organized Crime.
The U.S. Department of State's Bureau of International Narcotics Control and Law Enforcement Affairs funded the equipment which includes desktop and laptop computers, printers, copier machines, projectors, and other items. The equipment is intended to strengthen the operational and administrative capacities of the two crime-fighting divisions, and help modernize the technical resources of the Armenian Police.
This most recent donation is part of a more comprehensive U.S. Government assistance program that aims to help develop the ability of Armenian law enforcement structures to combat crime and also to administer justice fairly. Previous assistance provided to the Armenian Police has gone to the anti-trafficking-in-persons and anti-illegal migration divisions, as well as the Police Academy and Police Induction Center.
The U.S. Government annually provides approximately $3 million in law enforcement and criminal justice assistance to Armenia.
